Essentials for Family-Friendly Outdoor Living Spaces

It’s summertime and the living is easy! The weather is getting warmer, so it’s time to get out of that stuffy house and enjoy some fresh air. If you have a backyard or patio, then your outdoor living space just got way more interesting!

We’re sharing our best ideas on how to make your backyard space family-friendly. We’re including tips on decorating, making use of storage, and keeping it comfortable for everyone (even your fur babies!).

Outdoor Dining Space

Whether you’re enjoying coffee in the morning or having appetizers during sunset, your backyard can become a full-fledged dining spot!

Make sure you have a table and chairs with enough seating for your entire family.

To dine comfortably at any time of day, invest in some sort of cover, like an umbrella or shade sail.

Pick an area for food prep and storage that’s close enough to where you’ll eat, but will save you a trip to the kitchen.

It’s also important to keep surfaces clean and free of debris. No one wants to eat off a dirty table!

Finally, keep it cozy by storing comfy pillows, cushions, or blankets nearby.

Relaxation Space

Keep your outdoor patio or backyard a place to relax. Have some sort of seating that invites rest and relaxation, whether it’s a hammock or lounge chair.

It’s hard to relax when you’re sweating, so consider adding a ceiling fan if you have a covered patio.

And bring on the heat and ambience! A fire pit is perfect for when chillier weather settles in — or if your kids want summertime s’mores!

Add other decorating pieces such as vines and flowering plants to create a space that screams “relax.”

Kids Zone

If you have children, give them a space for playing. Add shelves to store toys and activities like sidewalk chalk, bubbles, board games, jump ropes, or toy cars.

Add a covered play area to give your little ones the chance to enjoy outdoor fun even when it’s raining!

And place comfortable seating nearby so mom and dad can chat with one another while keeping an eye on the kids.

Water Activities Area

Another way to make a backyard more family-friendly is by adding water features like sprinklers, fountains and pools. And if you’re looking for something even bigger: add a pool!

This not only provides an opportunity for the whole family to cool off during hot summer days but also makes it easy for kids to play in or pets to enjoy too.

Pet Playground

We can’t forget about your pets! Give your furry friends their own designated space and create a secure area with access to water, shade, food dishes, a dog house for naps, and a bin for toys.
