LET'S TALK ABOUT TIPS FOR CLEANING GRANITE COUNTERTOPS!

What makes granite so popular when building a new home? I'd say it's because it's a natural element, that is not only beautiful, but resists bacteria and staining, plus gives off a shine second to none.

But did you know that to keep that beautiful shine, there is a specific way to care for your granite countertops?

Here are lists of "do's and don'ts" when it comes to ensuring your countertops remain as shiny as they were on day one.

Do
-Reseal the granite every two to four years. I know that's quite a range. So how do you know when it's time? One tell tale sign is cleaning up spills becomes hard and water drops don't bead any longer. Some experts recommend resealing your granite every year. It comes down to what is best for you
-Use a few drops of mild dish soap and water, use a clean microfiber cloth to dry to avoid water marks If you don't feel right about just using mild soap and water, check out some of the cleaning products that are specifically formulated for granite at your local grocery or big box store
-Wipe spills as soon as they happen. Don't give them time to seep deep into your granite and cause damage you can't reverse

Don't
-Harsh chemicals and acidic cleaners are a big "don't". This includes vinegar, which will dull your granite
-Stay away from abrasive scrubbing tools. This may scratch or dull your stone
-Don't place hot or frozen items directly on the counter; Always use a trivet. This includes items such as crock pots and rice cookers - anything that projects a high heat
-Let's not use the countertops as a step to be able to get to those hard-to-reach places. This could create small fissures that may cause more severe cracks in the stone

To sum this up, cleaning your granite countertops takes the right tools. Use soap and water, avoiding harsh chemicals. Remember to wipe up all spills quickly and refrain from placing hot or frozen items directly on the counter.

If you follow these few, core suggestions, you will enjoy the durability and shine of your granite for years to come.
