LET'S TALK ABOUT TIPS ON HOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR GARAGE!

If you're anything like me, my garage has become a catch-all for anything I don't know what to do with or don't feel like lugging to my basement (my other catch-all!). As we get closer to the warmer weather, I've been eyeballing my garage thinking it's time to organize and declutter this space so I can find all my yard and gardening tools.

In an effort to make this as easy as possible for myself, I've searched out the best way to organize my garage and I'm happy to share what I found that I think will work best.

First.Think about the items in the garage in 4 ways:

  1. Keep
  2. Sell
  3. Donate
  4. Toss

Second. Start pulling out anything that is broken and irreparable or expired. These items become your toss pile. I think you will be surprised at how large the pile is...I have a feeling I will be anyway.

Third. Start separating what is left into their respective categories of keep, sell or donate.

Fourth. Once everything is sorted in the proper category, it's time to organize your keep pile by items. For instance, car care products may include a bucket, sponge, car wash and wax. Gather all hand tools and put in one space. Keep going with yard tools and recreational items, etc., until you've organized everything.

Fifth. Now it's time to determine placement.  This is where you may want to invest in peg boards, wire or metal shelving and plastic storage containers. Don't forget to look "up". The ceiling is a great, out-of-the-way space to hang bikes, sleds or kayaks to keep them out of the way in the "off" months.

Sixth. At last, we are ready to tackle the "sell / "donate" piles. Depending on the item(s) a yard sale may be a great option. But if you have larger, more expensive items, such as a lawn mower you no longer need or electric/gas-powered tools, Facebook Marketplace is a popular and relatively easy way to list your items for sale. I've done both many times myself successfully. Just remember to be safe when planning to meet with someone you don't know from Marketplace.

In conclusion, organizing your garage may seem like a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be. By following these simple steps, you can declutter and transform your garage into a functional space that meets your needs. Remember, investing in storage solutions like shelving and containers can help you maximize space and keep items organized. And, if you have items you no longer need, consider selling or donating them to free up even more space. With a little time and effort, you'll be able to enjoy a clean and organized garage that makes finding your tools and equipment a breeze.
